Each artist was given a pair of shoes and total creative freedom. The solutions are very thought provoking and celebrate the life of the most well known female artist.

I was so excited to finally meet Caitlin Freeman, author of Modern Art Desserts, last night with friend Susan Livingston at the Columbia Museum of Art. I found her book on the shelves at the Irmo Branch Library and was blown away by her artful interpretations of great works of art. Got to see her create her Mondrian Cake with the help of pastry chef Leah Rosenberg and although I couldn't eat the chocolate cake, David sure devoured it when I brought my piece home to him. Check out Blue Bottle Coffee during your next visit to San Francisco and hopefully in it's new space when the SFMOMA reopens in 2016!
If you haven't had a chance to stop by the Columbia Museum of Art lately, check it out soon. The One by 100: Creating with Constraints exhibition is only up through September 8, 2013. I have a small piece in the exhibition along with 99 other local artists. While you're there, be sure to check out the Dale Chihuly chandelier in the atrium. Oh, and there's always an artful reflection in surrounding buildings.

Southern author Kim Boykin will sign copies of her book, The Wisdom of Hair on Tuesday, July 23 from 4-6pm at the Barnes and Noble bookstore at 278-A Harbison Boulevard, Columbia, SC, 29212. I met Kim during the 2013 South Carolina Book Festival and knew that I wanted to share her book with my book club, Read Between the Wines.

Boykin is a women’s fiction author with a sassy Southern streak. Her debut novel, The Wisdom of Hair (Penquin/Berkley Books) explores the camaraderie in beauty school and the holy connection that exists between stylists and their clients. Already compared to The Help, the novel is based on the simple observation that women innately know; they believe if they can change their hair, they can change their lives.

Was glad to spend some time at the Grove Park Inn during it's 100th year anniversary. It's a place of such incredible history.

Working in creative harmony, art collaborators Doni Jordan of Columbia, SC and Janette Grassi of Charlotte, NC have created 5 artful violins, 4 for the South Carolina Philharmonic and one for the Chapin High School Philharmonic. They added paint, typography, heavy string and feathers to their violins. However, their favorite solution was play, a rhythmic painted violin which they created in 2008 and derived inspiration from the black and white lines on a printed score of musical composition.

So, they took the original photograph of the image by Les Stringer and with the help of nature photographer, Kent Porth, expanded the image it to create a tryptic on canvas.

In October of 2011, Grassi and Jordan created an art installation of 50 painted chairs titled reserve your seat to benefit Nature’s Theater, the upcoming premier 500-seat outdoor performance venue at Saluda Shoals Park in the Midlands of South Carolina. This award winning art installation brought public art into the park and increased exposure and donations to the efforts to build a performing arts venue at Saluda Shoals.

Janette Grassi is a native of St. Louis, Missouri. She now lives and creates in Charlotte, North Carolina. She spent her childhood and teen years in St. Louis and realized at five years of age that she was an artist. She attended Webster College where she studied fine art including sculpture, drawing and painting. Her journey to fulfill her childhood dream to study at a college devoted to art was achieved when she was accepted to the Rhode Island School of Design after raising her children and seeing them off to college. After completing her schooling she moved to Columbia, South Carolina to pursue her dream of becoming a full time artist. Renting a studio in the Vista she began her career as a painter. Her focus turned from graphic design to abstract painting and she began to build a body of work and have her first one woman show at Gallery 80808. Since then she has participated in many shows made many art donations to raise money for causes close to her heart, rediscovered her love of collage, collaborated with Doni Jordan on art installations, created fiber, book and recycled art. Janette is in many collections from private to public and continues to create art full time.
