Music has always been an important part of my life. From an early age, I was singing in the school and church choirs. Later, I took piano and singing lessons. Today my love of music is expressed through my support of the performing arts.

Friend and art partner, Janette Grassi and I have participated in four art benefits for the South Carolina Philharmonic and most recently expanded that support to include the Chapin Symphonic Society. Invited by board member, Marguerite Haines, she shared that the Society "helps provide music, performance opportunities, equipment and support to the strings departments of Chapin High School and Chapin Middle School in Chapin, SC."

So, when given our violin, we decided to wrap it in a "new string"…natural jute.

No strings attached, or at least, not enough.

Now it's time to wrap the front side.

I'm so excited to have my first solo exhibition @ USC Sumter February 9 - April 12, 2011. As a friend said to me yesterday, while attending an art talk at the University of South Carolina Rare Books and Special Collection Library by Jeffery Makala, "universities are sacred spaces."

I agree with her and am honored to have my work hang in the University Gallery adjacent to the Anderson Library. Academic galleries have a different meaning to me than commercial galleries. While both are intended to share art with the viewer, academic galleries, not only be their location, but by their mission, seem to offer more of an expanded opportunity for knowledge and exploration.

Additionally, because of the nature of my work, academic galleries seem like a natural fit.

I don't think there's any better time to be in New York with family than the holidays. I recently enjoyed five days in the city with my sisters and my nine year old niece. We stayed in Times Square and enjoyed all the things I wanted to do in New York at Christmastime…the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall, the Nutcracker at Lincoln Center, The Lion King, horse drawn carriage ride in Central Park, Rockefeller Plaza, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, a double decker bus ride, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

Although I missed my normal NY stops (MOMA, the Whitney, the Guggenheim, the Jewish Museum of Art and Cooper Hewitt Design Center), it was great to see the city through the eyes of a child. And although I didn't get to make my usual NYC stops, there was inspiration and art everywhere I looked. And my niece now shares my love of the city. When we stepped off the train in Philadelphia at the end of our trip, she exclaimed, "I miss that city already!"

Longwood Gardens, Delaware

I love to visit public gardens and I did so during a recent trip to Delaware. Longwood Gardens is beautiful anytime of year but it is especially so during the holiday season although the temperature was only 16 degrees. We arrived before sunset so that we could enjoy the park …day and night.

I was so excited to receive the news that I have been inducted into the National Association of Women Artists (NAWA)! The NAWA fosters public awareness and interest in fine art created by women. Its purpose is to promote cultural and educational opportunities in the visual arts through exhibitions, lectures, art demonstrations, scholarships, awards and other educational programs.

Founded in 1889, NAWA recently celebrated its 120^th anniversary. Early exhibitions included works by notable artists Rosa Bonheur and Mary Cassatt. Early membership included Anna Hyatt Huntington and Louise Nevelson. Judy Chicago and Faith Ringgold currently serve as Honorary Vice Presidents of the organization. I'm so proud to be a member of an organization that honors these women artists.

Art collaborator and friend Janette Grassi and I rushed to the 24-Hour Grand Opening Community Celebration on Friday, October 1, 2o1o at the Mint Museum UPTOWN in Charlotte, NC. Always have been a fan and supporter of both the downtown and the Randolph Road location of the Mint, but this new space elevates the collection. Located beside the newly opened Belchter Museum, I'll often be saying "Meet Me at the Mint."

I was really drawn to the Inaugural Exhibition, Contemporary British Studio Ceramics: The Grainer Collection and can't wait to view it again when it's not so crowded.

Brookgreen Gardens…My Secret Garden

Last week I visited Brookgreen Gardens, my "secret garden" located just south of Myrtle Beach, SC. Although it is a National Historic Landmark and houses the largest collection of outdoor figurative sculpture by American artists, most South Carolinians have never visited this incredible place yet it is a destination for many Europeans.

Massive and tiny sculptures can be found at every turn. You'll find them in wide open spaces, in small secluded gardens, in fountains, on benches and grassy pedistals, in glass houses and behind gates.

Although you must visit yourself to truly appreciate it's beauty, here's a sampling of my "secret garden." Come on in…

On the Move Again

After two months of healing, I'm finally on the move again. Literally. I'm walking daily and have begun making art again. The creative process is so healing but earlier I wasn't ready to begin again. Now I am. So, I'm off to the studio inspired by these beautiful tulips that a friend took me to see which was a turning point in my recovery.

But before I go, have you heard that the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC will host a traveling exhibition of Christo and Jeanne-Claude:Running Fence from April 2, 2010 - September 26, 2010? I read it a full-page ad in the New York Times and I can't wait to see it! Although I've never seen one of their public art creations, I've studied and admired them for years. I think this exhibition is a must-see!

A Matter of the Heart

Sometimes something can happen in your life that will change it forever. That something happened to me on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at 6:30am. I went into the hospital for a "minor" heart procedure and ended up spending five days in cardiac ICU because of complications.

I was so convinced that it would be a simple procedure that I didn't even take a toiletry bag with me to the hospital. We had also planned a party at our house for two days later to celebrate the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

Two days later I was still connected to IV's, an oxygen tank and had a tube in my chest to drain the fluid from around my heart.

The change in my life came when I woke up and was surrounded by my family and friends who continue to be there for me throughout this healing process. They give their love unconditionally and lift my spirits when they lag. They bring me flowers, fruit, sweet smelling body lotions and soaps, magazines, books, pajamas, blankets and meals (many, many meals) along with hugs, smiles and tears. They've raised me up during a time of pain, uncertainty and loss. Prayers, phone calls and e-mails continue to arrive daily reminding me of the abundance of love and support I have in my life.

Help for Haiti.

Today I wrote a check to the American Red Cross to send to Haiti relief following the devastation of the worst earthquake ever to hit this small Caribbean Island. No matter what I send, it's not enough.

It's not enough when you see bodies lying on the street, bodies crushed under piles of concrete. It's not enough when medical care is not available despite horrific wounds and injuries. It's not enough when days after the quake family members still have no news about their loved ones. It's not enough when unidentified bodies are being shoveled into mass graves. It's not enough when people are dying from lack of food and water. It's not enough when people are sleeping on the street because they have no home to go to.

It's not enough.

Bechtler Museum of Art, Charlotte, NC

Yesterday I visited a new museum. I always love viewing art but seeing a new museum open during a time of economic despair made my heart sing…and to visit it with a friend was even better. Janette Grassi and I visited the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art in Charlotte, NC on a glorious winter day. The sky was blue which provided an incredible backdrop for the terra cotta-tiled museum designed by Swiss architect Mario Boatta which houses the personal collection of mid-20th century modern art of Andreas Bechtler which now belongs to the city and people of Charlotte.

I sensed a feeling of familiarity upon seeing the building and soon realized why. Boatta, a personal friend of Bechtler, also designed the San Francisco of Fine Art (SOFA) which I visited a few years ago. The building itself is a work of art but the fourth floor gallery was a sight for my art deprived eyes. I was especially drawn to a small piece by Paul Klee on burlap.

The swelling column at the front entrance hints of a spinning textile spool and to the textile history of the region. The second floor balcony which houses several pieces of sculpture also provided an incredible view of the city skyline and the new site of the Mint Museum which is scheduled to open next year.

Andreas Bechtler gave a huge gift not only to the city of Charlotte but to me.

Laughter heals what ails you.

I go to massage therapy on a regular basis. I started going during the time I worked at the Rape Crisis Network to help me deal with the stressful situations I encountered on a daily basis there. Once I left the agency, I continued to go, having experienced the healing power of touch.

Today, with my many tennis ailments, I try to still go at least twice a month. Now I go for the massage and for the laughter. Karen, my massage therapist, laughs from the tip of her red painted toe nails to the top of her smiling face.

If you've never had a massage, you should. It's the best gift I've ever given myself. Truth be known, I'd rather have a massage than eat.

I treated my 8 year old niece to a massage with Karen this summer while she was here visiting for two weeks. She told Karen that when she grows up she is going to buy her a house next to hers so that she can be her private massage therapist. Even a child knows a good thing when she sees it and I love that she dreams really BIG!

Old Man Winter.

Although it's winter in South Carolina, temperatures rarely fall as low as they have the last few days. The average temperatures are normally in the 50's and it's been in the teens overnight and in the 30's during the day. Brrrrrrr.

That was certainly the way I felt today in Charlotte, NC when I spent the day with a friend. The wind was blowing and it was so cold there that even the water wasn't flowing.

I was stopped at a red light yesterday and glanced over and this is what I saw…a junk truck that will tow junk cars. First I laughed and then I thought, how creative. This business didn't spend a lot of money on signage, all they needed was a can of paint and a brush. And isn't that all any of us need to create, just simple tools and desire to do it.

A New Decade.

Today is the first day of the new decade.

So, here it is a new beginning… a clean slate to do with it what I will. Although I have usually listed my new year's resolutions by now, I have decided to start this year differently. As a dear friend said to me, "2010…look again." And to that I'll add, listen again. So as this new year begins, I will take time to reflect, to look with fresh eyes and to listen to what my soul is saying.

Christmas in the Smokies!

This year my family gathered at a lodge in the Great Smokey Mountains to celebrate Christmas. It was a new experience for us since we normally gather at one of our homes but since we are scattered along the east coast from Alabama to Delaware, the mountains of Tennessee seemed the perfect meeting place.

My niece and I visited the lodge last year on the day after Thanksgiving to check it out. Rachel Ray had just named it "the best place in America to have Thanksgiving dinner." After spending five days there, we decided it was "the best place in America to celebrate Christmas with your family!"

Little did we know that an epic snow storm would fall just days before our arrival making the journey treacherous for some and delightful for others. My niece in South Carolina departed Sumter Air Force base with her two small children on the day the snow storm struck and hit a sheet of black ice and went over an embankment. Fortunately, no one was hurt but my twin sister and her husband drove from Tennessee to North Carolina to rescue them before leaving the next day to drive to Alabama to pick up my aging parents.

My sister in Delaware received 24 inches of snow and had to delay leaving home. Since I-40 west is closed between Asheville and Knoxville due to a rock slide, David and I had to alter our route and drive through the Smokies.

Santa brought David his Christmas present a few days early so he was anxious to try out his new GPS system for his motorcycle in the car. So, with two GPS systems on our dash, we negotiated the way, altering it when we found roads closed due to ice.

What we found was a Christmas wonderland! The higher we climbed, the more snow we found. The Smokies are beautiful any time of year but bathed in snow and ice, they are magical. Everyone was enjoying the snow, snowball fights and snowmen and women were visible at every pull off along the way.

A Day of Art.

One of my favorite holiday memories was spending the day with my friend Delores Logan. The day began with a fabulous holiday feast (sausage, bacon, Southern grits, biscuits, baked apples) that she prepared for us. After eating we spent the entire day viewing her monumental collection of African Art. She shared a story about each piece including the history of the artist and the work, the region of Africa it came from and how and where she acquired it. I can't think of a better holiday gift to give myself…art and time with a friend!

A Beautiful Thing.

Helen Keller once said, "The most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart." I felt a beautiful thing when I visited the Wagener Women's Well in rural Wagener, SC with my friends Kay Reardon and Sue Bowersock.

The Wagener Women's Well is a center for women which provides hope, support, life skills and meals to the women of Wagener, SC. The center staff teaches money and home management skills, sewing, quilting, healthy cooking, computer basics and leads Bible studies. The mission of the center is to give encouragement to those who are in need of a "better hope" in life and to help build confidence and trust through the leadership skill of caring mentors.

Moore in America

After a bountiful Thanksgiving with family in Atlanta and much to be thankful for, David and I enjoyed spending Friday at the Moore in America exhibit at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens in downtown Atlanta. Although other family members chose to spend their time at the Georgia Aquarium, the CNN building or the malls, I knew it was a "must see" for me even though David tried to convince me otherwise after waking to ice on our windshields and freezing temperatures. Since we arrived shortly after opening, we literally had a private tour of the exhibit and gardens.

Moore (1898-1986) was born in England and was a sculptor and teacher and is "often considered the first sculptor to create fine art intended to be displayed outdoors that were not memorials, monuments or garden ornaments." He is considered the most important British sculptor of the twentieth century.

Moore drew inspiration from nature and often blended landscape forms and those of the human figure. His work often includes a mother and child, a reclining woman and organic and interlocking forms. You may have seen his work outside the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.

Moore in America is the largest special exhibition of Henry Moore's monumental sculptures ever presented in the United States and was named one of the Top 10 Museum Exhibitions by Time magazine. The exhibit has been extended through December 31st and includes 20 large scale pieces of bronze and marble.

Since I did not purchase the exhibition catalog but rather a book of Moore's plasters, carvings and drawings, I'm not able to provide the title of each piece.

Holiday Music Soars!

While I was listening to this incredible CD I thought of my dear friend Janette Grassi and the violin we created this year for the SC Philharmonic benefit. If I could I would send angel wings to heal Janette following a severe fall that left her with a broken ankle, broken hand and finger.

The Artist Way: Sacred Circle

Last night was the last meeting of our 12 week Artist's Way book discussion and the beginning of our Sacred Circle group. Someone asked me if I thought our meetings had been productive and I realized that what I gained was the realization that I always want to be a loving, generous soul, kind and supportive and to create in everything I do, not just in art.

Last night I attended her opening Liisa Salosaari Jasinski: Oil Paintings 2006-2009 at Gallery 80808 with my friend Deborah Farr. Liisa's work takes me to a dream like state and her use of color and organic shapes draws me even deeper into that place.

Last night Kay and I attended the opening of the Ansel Adams: Masterworks exhibition at the Columbia Museum of Art. It was the largest crowd that ever attended an opening at the museum which was very apparent by the standing room only crowd that attended the art lecture by Julian Cox, curator of the photography at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. We also enjoyed viewing The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection: Fifty Works for Fifty States exhibition.

I enjoyed viewing Adams body of work, especially the black and white wilderness photographs, including the images he took in the early 1920's in Yosemite Nation Park, but I also enjoyed reading his words.

…a great photograph is one that fully expresses what one feels, in the deepest sense, about what is being photographed, and is thereby, a true manifestation of what one feels about life in its entirety." Ansel Adams

Influenza Vaccine

Yesterday afternoon David and I arrived for our appointments to get a flu shot and the nurse informed us that we were very lucky to get the vaccine because supplies are very low due to the high demand for shots this season. With the outbreak of the H1N1 virus this year, many more people are getting flu shots this year.

South Carolina Philharmonic: Oktoberfest

Despite the first cold wave of the season, last night we attended a performance of the South Carolina Philharmonic at the Koger Center in Columbia, SC in celebration of Janette's birthday. The performance was lively and warmed our spirits. Afterwards we discovered photographs of the first inductees into the SC Art Hall of Fame hanging just outside the exit of the concert hall.

Talking Threads: a quilt + fiber arts symposium

I remember hand quilting with my paternal grandmother when I was a young girl during the endless summer that my dad was in Vietnam. I was so proud of my first quilt square until I discovered that while holding it in my lap I had sewn it to my dress. Although I was distraught, my grandmother quickly helped me dissolve my dilemma and once again I was a happy quilter. These memories all came flooding back to me on a rainy day at the Sumter County Gallery of Art in Sumter, SC as I attended the Talking Threads: a quilt + fiber arts symposium with my friends Kay Reardon and Susan Lenz.

SC Arts Commission/ Contemporary Conversations: Part 1/State Art Collection

The South Carolina Arts Commission, The South Carolina Arts Foundation and the 701 Center for Contemporary Art recently unveiled its exhibition of the State Art Collection: Contemporary Conversations: Part 1 curated by Eleanor Heartney, contributing editor to Art in America, at the 701 Gallery in Columbia, SC.

Janette Grassi and I enjoyed privately viewing the exhibition on a cold fall morning and then returned that evening for an art talk by Heartney titled The Biennial Paradox. Although we purchased the catalogue of the state art collection, we decided to shelf it until we view part 2 of the exhibition which opens on November 5th. Below are just a couple of my favorite pieces included in the exhibition.

Amish Country

Each time I travel to visit my sister in Newark, Delaware I ask her if we can take a day trip to Lancaster, PA to visit the Amish Country. This visit was no different so the day after I arrived, we loaded the car and headed to the pristine countryside.

What was different, however, was the time of year I visited. I was there in early October to celebrate the upcoming birth of my brother's first child and leaves were as beautiful as the patterns on the Amish quilts.

After a full day in Amish Country we welcomed a delicious hot meal at the home of my nephew and his wife, Melissa. Maddie holds their precious daughter, Emma, long enough for me to snap a photo.

Our day ended back in Newark for dessert at my brother's house. Joe and Tori can't wait for thier newborn to arrive and neither can we!

2009 South Carolina State Fair

Visiting the South Carolina State Fair with friends has become an annual ritual. We begin with viewing the adult and student art and then move to the floral and sand sculpture displays. This year the fair celebrated the Congaree National Park, South Carolina's only national park, which seemed appropriate after watching Ken Burn's educational series on national parks.

Sacred Spaces

This week a friend took me to one of her sacred spaces. It was a beautiful river trail tucked in the foothills of North Carolina. We treked five miles and enjoyed every step of the way. When we reached a turn in the river, we sat down an enjoyed a delicious meal she had prepared for us. Every one should have a friend like my dear friend Kay.

On Friday, I in turn took my nieces and their parents to one of my sacred spaces…the children's room of the Richland County Public Library in downtown Columbia. I love Maurice Sendak's book and mural "WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE," which can be seen by looking over the railing on the first floor of the library or up close and personal on the ground level. Thanks to Columbia native, Augusta Baker, long time children's librarian of the New York Public Library, we're so fortunate to have the only public mural of this work in the nation in our library. If you haven't seen it, you should!

The Water Flows Pink

After spending the weekend in Charlotte, NC with my friend and art collaborator, Janette Grassi, I spotted this pink fountain as we were heading to the mall to pick up some art supplies. Before heading out of town, I insisted that we make one last stop together to capture the first pink water fountain I have ever seen in honor of my mother, Bettye Scarbrough, a breast cancer survivor.

Carolina's Got Art

Carolina's Got Art opened Friday, October 2, 2009 at Atherton Mills in Charlotte, NC. Sponsored by Larry Elder of the Elder Gallery of Charlotte, the exhibition featured the work of artists from North and South Carolina. Juried by art critic, writer and artist Brice Brown of New York City, I was honored to be one of the 90 artists selected from the 1100 entries. The show includes paintings, sculpture, mixed media, collage and textile arts and is open to the public through October 30, 2009. Two small assemblages of my work are included in the exhibition and my art collaborator and friend, Janette Grassi and I attended the opening reception.

The Joy Continues…

Just before the end of Madison's visit, another great joy came our way. My twin sister's daughter, Crystal, whose husband is in the US Air Force and was stationed in Washington state, about as far as you can get from South Carolina, was reassigned to Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, South Carolina. Crystal and her husband, Cassie and their two children, Choe and Cayla are now only an hour away! I don't know who was happier, Maddie to have her cousins nearby, my twin sister, who now has her only grand babies only 5 hours away or me!

Of course I planned a family gathering as soon as they arrived and then we went to one of Maddie's favorite places in Columbia…Edventure, the children's museum. Lucky for us, the butterfly exhibit was still there so we started our visit by chasing butterflies.

A Family Portrait

During the time that my niece Madison was with us this summer, I suggested she paint some family portraits. During our trip to Michael's to buy some art supplies she announced, "I was born to create art!" as we walked down the long, crowded aisles. At that very moment I was reminded why I love this little girl so much. It seemed destined that she and I would have such a close relationship since her mother was the flower girl at our wedding.

After she finished her family portrait series, I took a few shots when she left them out on the kitchen counter to dry.

Three Weeks of JOY!

It often takes the joy of a child to remind us what's really important in our lives. This summer our 8 year old niece, Madison, spent 3 weeks with us. We spent a day on the beach at Hunting Island State Park, one of my favorite beaches in South Carolina, during our weeklong vacation at Fripp Island. We arrived just before sunrise and enjoyed our own private beach!

Maddie loves the ocean as much as I do and was especially drawn to the palmetto trees and tree stumps she discovered as she did handstands along the ocean front.

A Day with Ellen Kochansky

Spend a day with an artist in their studio and you'll get a glimpse of their body of work. Spend a day in their home and you'll get a glimpse of their soul. Such was the case when friend Kay Reardon and I traveled to Pickens, SC to visit the studio and home of Ellen Kochansky and her husband Jamie Davis in the foothills of South Carolina. Kay and I were in awe of the natural beauty that surrounded their art compound but were also awed by the artful way they live their lives.

Kay and I went to Ellen's studio to assist her with an art project that she's been commissioned to do for a hospital in Charleston, SC.

Yesterday I received a thank you gift from Ellen for helping with the project. It is a beautiful fold out book that includes a collection of heart images that she created. The inscription reads, "doni…endless thanks for your help, support and inspiration. love, ellen. Ellen, thanks for the "hearts," I know you are sending healing hearts for my ailing one!

Anne Bourdreau…wonderment!

I hope you had a chance to see Anne Boudreau's exhibition, a delicate balance, at 701 CCA. I saw it last week with friend Kay Reardon. We were both in awe of the artful designs, the technical expertise and craftmanship and the feeling we had while in the space. I was reminded of Anne's exhibition that I saw many years ago in Camden, SC. when I felt like I had walked into Monet's garden when I entered the space.

Kay Reardon attended a class that Anne offered during her time at 701 CCA and was included in the exhibition.

Anne is an incredible artist and I am so glad that I was able to be in a group exhibition with her many years ago titled A Celebration of Women and Art in Gallery 80808 at Vista Studios in Columbia, SC.

Southeast Association for Book Arts (SABA) Conference 2009

Last week I was ill (temperature of 102 degrees) so I missed two days of the SABA conference at the University of South Carolina but I was glad to be able to attend the last two days of Daniel Essig's book art class. Daniel is a very gifted artist and a great teacher.

New York, New York!

Anytime is a good time to be in New York, even if it's raining. So even after four straight days of downpours during our trip in May, I was reminded why I love this city so much. It's the energy, it's the history, it's the architecture, it's the people, it's the art (and sometimes what you see looking outside the windows of a museum is equally as artful as anything hanging on the walls!).

After spending the day at MOMA and seeing an incredible exhibition titled, Tangled Alphabets: Leon Ferrari and Mira Schendel, I also visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art (great postcard exhibition, a pictorial history of our country), the Museum of Art and Design (especially enjoyed the glass exhibition including huge pieces of glass hung as canvases on the walls and of course, it's location looking down over Central Park) and the Cooper Hewitt Museum (as I entered the fashioning felt exhibition in the conservatory I felt like I had entered a divine space). I had planned to visit the Guggenheim but since three floors were closed, I decided instead to tour Carnegie Hall.

And boy am I glad I did! Hearing the history of the space and it's near demise, I was grateful to be able to sit in the space and imagine Yo-Yo Ma or Itzak Pearlman performing on the grand stage. It seemed so fitting since I was reading The Soloist, the story of Nathaniel Ayers, a Juilliard trained musician who suffers from schizohprenia by Steve Lopez at the time. I hope to attend a performance at Carnegie Hall during our next trip to New York.

I was, however, able to see Wicked at the Gershwin Theatre. I went to the box office the day of the show and although it was advertised as "sold out," I was able to purchase a single ticket in the upper balcony. The costume and set design, the dialogue, the score, the performance…all were incredible!

While in New York we met a couple from Brazil at dinner at a northern Italian restaurant and became instant friends. We've already been communicating with each other since we've returned home and we hope to visit Andre and Fatima in Brazil someday soon.

Traveling is about visiting new places but it's also about making new friends. During a trip to Los Angelos several years ago, I met a couple, Rosy and Rod, from Australia during a day long bus tour of the city. We also stayed in touch, visited them last year during our trip to Australia and in two weeks, they are coming to South Carolina. I can't wait to see them again and to share our beautiful state with them! It is truly a small world, afterall!

Make New Friends…

As a young child I remember singing the song at summer camp, "Make new friends but keep the old, one is silver and the other is gold." It wasn't until I became an adult that I really began to understand the meaning of those words. I am truly blessed with incredible friendships and have recently found a "new friend." Her name is Kay Reardon and she lives just down the road from me. It's funny that I had to travel downtown to meet someone so close to home. We met at cyber fyber, an art exhibition launched by Columbia artist Susan Lenz at Gallery 80808 in Vista Studios in Columbia. We share many interests, art, of course is one of them. But, I've realized that it is not just the love of art that brings us together but simply the ability to give and to receive love. Kay is a "new friend" but one that I believe will be an "old one" very soon.

South Carolina Philharmonic: 2009 Painted Violin

I love music. So, every year when the South Carolina Philharmonic invites artists to participate in the Painted Violin project, my friend Janette Grassi and I are eager to do so. This year, however, was different. It was a juried competition so there were no guarantees of being included. We had to create a concept and proposal and submit it. So, you can imagine our joy when we received confirmation that we were included.

Artists are invited to participate in many benefits but this is by far our favorite. We want to support the SC Philharmonic and the SC Philharmonic appreciates and values artists. Event chairperson Lani Stringer is the most creative, organized person and does an incredible job of highlighting the artists and their work. Last year she designed a very artful, full color catalog for the event and this year she is creating a book which will be auctioned along with the violins. She also designs and produces a poster of each piece which is yet another sales opportunity for the Philharmonic. In addition, she organizes a reception for the event and this year it will be held in conjunction with Artista Vista, when a large crowd of art supporters are present. The South Carolina Philharmonic is lucky to have such a talented, dedicated volunteer and we are excited to be included in the 2009 Painted Violin benefit!

2009 AIDS benefit platter with Janette Grassi

Every time Janette Grassi and I are asked to participate in the annual ABFSC Dining With Friends aids benefit, we agree to do it. Both of us have known and lost someone to aids and it's our way of trying to raise awareness of this dreadful disease and to increase funding for aids survivors and for aids research.

This year's theme is Paint The Town Red and we decided to do just that. So, here's a before and after of our platter.

Spring Has Arrived

Well not officially, that doesn't occur until Saturday but you can tell it's not far off. I've had a terrible sinus infection and our cars and back porch are already covered with a yellow blanket of pollen. However, my favorite sign of spring is the beautiful blooming shrubs and trees.

Brian Rutenberg:SC Book Festival

Yesterday I went to the SC Book Festival at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center with my friend Kay Reardon. It was the first time I had ever been to the book festival but I had read Jeffrey Day's article in The State about Brian Rutenburg and I wanted to hear his art talk. Although Ruttenberg had a show two years ago at the SC State Museum, I was out of county and did not see the exhibition so I was not familiar with his new body of work.

I'm so glad Kay and I made the effort to go to the show, despite the pouring rains and flooded streets. Rutenberg's art talk was a gift. He presented a slide show of some of his early drawings, his inspirations, his philosophy and his new body of work. He was a kind and very thoughtful person sharing his history and thoughts about color and art and his process of creating his massive paintings. When it ended, I felt like I had attended an art history class.

Turner to Cezanne: Columbia Museum of Art

Yesterday I spent the morning at the Columbia Museum of Art helping prepare 3500 invitations for mailing to the opening of the blockbuster exhibition: Turner to Cezanne from the National Museum of Wales. There is much excitement in the air with Columbia being the first US city that this exhibition will travel to and crowds are expected from throughout the southeast.

I'm working on the gala decorations committee and have enjoyed getting to know museum staff and volunteers.

I went back to Africa

Last night I went back to Africa. Well actually, Africa came to me. My friend and African Art dealer Demba Saccoh from Guinea, West Africa came to my home with a incredible array of African artifacts. Every visit I feel like I have traveled back to Africa or at least visited a blockbuster exhibition at a museum. He does sell to museums but I'm grateful that he always is willing to come to my home, even for a small few. Last night friends Deborah Farr, Bobbie Fischer, Ellen Taylor, Dolly Patton, Loretta Simpkins, Deanna Kuhlman (who brought guest Ken) and Tom Chinn (who brought guests Tim McLendon and Denise Dickinsen) also traveled back to Africa with me.

Demba always brings new items for us to see and touch and learn about. Last night was no exception. He brought kuba cloths, vessels, honey pots, shoes, dolls, swords, feathered head dresses, masks, tables, bells, copper money, doors, two healing stools and a large meditation bed. I love the textures of each piece and the stories he shares. Last night he seemed saddened, knowing the struggles his family is enduring in his homeland.

I'm so grateful he came in to my life, he's such a loving, caring person. I'm going to meet his wife during my trip to New York this spring with David. I'm so looking forward to it. Until then, I'll think of him and his homeland every time I look at the small kuba cloth I purchased last night. Thanks Demba for taking me back to Africa.

I remember reading once that you are what you see, what you feel, what you think, what you do, what you experience, what you read. This morning I am reading life is a verb by Patti Digh. The one line that speaks to me this moment is…write to remember.

I started this book a couple of weeks ago and then left it at random arts in Saluda, NC for the author to sign during a book tour. Yesterday, my friend Jean Ross brought the book to me after visiting her mountain retreat in Columbus, NC. I was elated to read the inscription that she wrote. It reads,

During my trip to Saluda, NC with Janette Grassi and Jean Ross, we attended a woven book workshop at random arts in Saluda, NC. We love the creative spirit that owner and artist Jane Powell exudes. We all had a great time weaving fabrics and stories and learning new techniques.

The process of blogging

I've been working on my blog for several weeks and have grown more and more frustrated with the process. Thanks to friend Susan Lenz, I am now ready to move forward with the process. It is, after all, about moving forward.

Today I submitted work for the SABA juried art exhibition. Even that was a challenge, but a learning process as well. Now, I have to wait to see if I'm accepted. Or not. Who knows, art is so subjective.

In the meantime, I'm going to finish some client work and get ready for a visit from African Art dealer Demba Saccoh. I always look forward to his visits. I feel like I've traveled back to his beautiful homeland after seeing all the incredible works of art and artifacts.

SCPTA Statewide Student Art Competition: Reflections

I had a new art experience recently. I was asked by Jill Schneider of Greenville, SC to recruit judges for a statewide student art competition. It was the state level of the national PTA Reflections program for students (Early Elementary (grades 1-3), Elementary (grades 4-5), Middle and High school) throughout South Carolina at Lower Richland High School in Columbia on Saturday, February 7, 2009. The theme this year is WOW! and there were two categories to be judged…visual arts and photography.

My goal was to recruit judges which represented the diversity of South Carolina (gender, ethnicity, counties) and of art (mediums, education and experiences).

I was grateful to the following artists who graciously gave of their time, energy and expertise.

2. Nick Cortin, Columbia, photographer

3. Ellen Kochansky, Pickens, fiber artist

4. Wendell Brown, Benedict College, art professor

The entries were judged on 3 criteria:

• creativity

• interpretation of the theme (WOW!)

• artistic merit

We were all amazed at the entries and found it difficult to narrow it down to the winners (three winners and three honorable mention in each age group). Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony in Greenville on April 25, 2009 and will advance to the national competition.

Some of my favorite childhood memories are attending birthday parties so when my friend Janette Grassi offered to host my birthday party this year, I eagerly accepted. I knew it would be a great party with good friends and incredible food. So, my friends made a road trip to Charlotte, NC and we all talked, laughed, caught up with each others lives and ate Italian food and coconut cupcakes with black and white candles. It was a great celebration!
